چکیده

The survey literature distinguishes cross-sectional and longitudinal designs, but most surveys conducted in practice are based on cross-sectional designs. The limitations of these cross sectional surveys are that they are confined to a specific point in time. That is, they provide us with a snapshot of a sample of a population at a single point in time. Since population characteristics constantly change over time, cross-sectional surveys for such situations do not reflect the actual situation. This raises the issue of measuring social characteristics over time in a single study – the objective of a longitudinal study. The study of change over time is called longitudinal analysis. In this sense, longitudinal studies involve the study of a process of change over a period of time. Such trends can also be observed by comparing the results of surveys that are conducted in separate years. The aim of this paper is to point out the importance of conducting longitudinal surveys for a variety of situations, and the importance of applying the correct statistical techniques for data obtained from longitudinal surveys.

Neuropsychological performance in older patients with schizophrenia: a meta-analysis of cross-sectional and longitudinal studies.

OBJECTIVE Cognitive deficits are among the most reliable predictors of functional impairment in schizophrenia and a particular concern for older individuals with schizophrenia. Previous reviews have focused on the nature and course of cognitive impairments in younger cohorts, but a quantitative meta-analysis in older patients is pending. METHOD A previously used search strategy identified stu...

Sequential progressions in a theory-of-mind scale: longitudinal perspectives.

Consecutive retestings of 92 U.S. preschoolers (n=30), Chinese preschoolers (n=31), and deaf children (n=31) examined whether the sequences of development apparent in cross-sectional results with a theory-of-mind scale also appeared in longitudinal assessment. Longitudinal data confirmed that theory-of-mind progressions apparent in cross-sectional scaling data also characterized longitudinal se...

Changes in uterine artery Doppler velocimetry and circulating angiogenic factors in the first half of pregnancies delivering small-for-gestational age neonates: Placental Doppler and biomarker slopes in smallness-for-gestational age

Objective To assess the relationship between longitudinal changes in placental Doppler indices and maternal circulating angiogenic factors in the first half of pregnancy and delivery of a small-for-gestational-age (SGA) neonate, and ascertain whether longitudinal evaluation of these variables improves the prediction achieved by second-trimester cross-sectional evaluation. Methods From a prospec...

Longitudinal Analysis Is More Powerful than Cross-Sectional Analysis in Detecting Genetic Association with Neuroimaging Phenotypes

Most existing genome-wide association analyses are cross-sectional, utilizing only phenotypic data at a single time point, e.g. baseline. On the other hand, longitudinal studies, such as Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI), collect phenotypic information at multiple time points. In this article, as a case study, we conducted both longitudinal and cross-sectional analyses of the A...
